contacts the ball, resulting in weak
and erratic shots.

Swaying can cause this problem.

When you sway back in your backswing and you
do not sway forward during your downswing, your
clubhead bottoms out and begins to move inside
well behind the ball.

This misaligns the clubface at impact.

It can also be caused by, or in combination with,
an out-to-in swingpath.

With the right tempo, let your lower body start the
downswing, keep your elbow tucked against your
side, and keep your left side firm through impact.

Transfer weight from top of swing diagonally
toward right of target, while letting right elbow
come down.

PROBLEM: Hitting behind the ball or too high on
the ball.

This is often caused by swaying during the swing. Any side-
to-side or up and down head movement should be avoided.

To get the right feel, hit some practice shots with feet together.

During your weight shift, concentrate on keeping the weight
on your right foot on the inside of your foot.

Check your progress by taking practice swings with sun
behind you and watching your shadow.

Don’t let the clubface get ahead of your hands at impact.

To avoid hitting chips and pitches fat:

Don’t sole the club at address.

Use an open, narrow stance.

Keep arms connected to chest and rotate body rather than
sliding hips laterally and jabbing at the ball with your hands.

Focus eyes on front of ball, with weight on front foot and wrists
ahead of ball at address and through impact.

Be sure to make a complete follow-through.

It offers a magnificent 18-hole course designed by Tom Jackson, with fairways that meander through a picturesque, heavily wooded rolling terrain. The rolling hills, unusual for a coastal course, are this layout’s signature.

From the day it opened, this challenging design, with frequent 40-foot elevation changes and non-parallel fairways, has been greeted with acclaim. The course has been named to Golfweek’s Top 50 in the Southeast list, and our recent renovation has helped make River Hills a favorite choice for Grand Strand golfers.

The immaculately manicured greens provide optimum playing conditions throughout the year and the course provides four sets of tees, so golfers of all skill levels can enjoy an unforgettable playing experience. At the clubhouse, gracious Southern hospitality abounds, with a full-service golf shop, grill and bar where the friendly, courteous staff prides itself on a tradition of quality customer service.

It has been a few years since I stayed at The Bay Hill Club and Lodge, but be assured it is still very fresh on my mind. Finding the place, without GPS or any google directions was not easy. It is in the middle of a residential area, away from the hustle and bustle of the theme parks and such. When we pulled up at the Lodge, we were greeted immediately by a doorman and escorted inside to the front desk. Keep in mind this is a lodge and not a huge resort, so the lobby was very small but welcoming and quaint. The room was not huge but was elegant, comfortable and clean. The staff was very helpful offering suggestions for dining off the property as well as promoting the on-site gourmet restaurant. The room and ammenities did not matter to me as I was there for one thing only…GOLF. I had the privilege of playing the first 9 with three very nice members and the second nine on my own. I had the entire back nine to myself and enjoyed every minute of it. I have played many courses on the PGA Tour’s schedule and would have to say, without a doubt this is one of the very best! Beautiful, challenging and fun, not to mention the immaculate conditioning.
If you ever get the chance, do not hesitate to stay at The Bay Hill Club and Lodge over any of the higher end golf resorts in the Orlando area or anywhere in Florida for that matter.

Nearly perfect course with wonderful views, superb layout and a classic test of shotmaking.

The Course
Opened in 1962, Poquoy Brook is one of Geoffrey Cornish’s earliest and best designs. Featuring rolling hills, tight, tree-lined fairways and greens that are always well maintained, the course draws raves for spectacular scenery and a pleasant staff.
The Experience
It plays a hefty 6,762 yards from the back tees, although it’s a different course from the men’s blue markers, where most of the par 4s are easily reachable in two. Still, the greens are deceptively difficult, making pars more difficult. The finishing holes are noteworthy, with the 430-yard 16th, 410-yard 17th and 481-yard par-5 18th all solidly designed, tough and fair. The signature hole is the par-5 18th hole. A dogleg left, with water in front of the tee and a stream cutting across the fairway in front of the green, this hole demands length, patience and intelligence.

Vital Stats
Number of holes: 18
Yardage: 6,762
Par: 72
Driving range: Yes
