Nearly perfect course with wonderful views, superb layout and a classic test of shotmaking.
Opened in 1962, Poquoy Brook is one of Geoffrey Cornish’s earliest and best designs. Featuring rolling hills, tight, tree-lined fairways and greens that are always well maintained, the course draws raves for spectacular scenery and a pleasant staff.
It plays a hefty 6,762 yards from the back tees, although it’s a different course from the men’s blue markers, where most of the par 4s are easily reachable in two. Still, the greens are deceptively difficult, making pars more difficult. The finishing holes are noteworthy, with the 430-yard 16th, 410-yard 17th and 481-yard par-5 18th all solidly designed, tough and fair. The signature hole is the par-5 18th hole. A dogleg left, with water in front of the tee and a stream cutting across the fairway in front of the green, this hole demands length, patience and intelligence.
